Exchanged and ready to move: Your 1 Month until Move Day Checklist

1 month and counting – What you should be doing.

By now you should be speaking with your solicitor about exchanging contracts and finalising the actual move date. Once confirmed, you will need to book this date with your chosen removal company. Then with just 4 weeks to go until Moving Day, this is the time to knuckle down and get things organised and packed.

Pack your non-essential items

If you have chosen not to use a full packing service through your removal company, now is the start to packing up your non-essential items and the belongings in your least used rooms.

Hopefully by now you will have decluttered in preparation for the move, and removed these items from the property. Make sure to book in specific days to take items to a local charity shop, recycling centre or refuse site.

Make a List of items to move

Prepare a list of what you want to move from which room, and have this ready to hand over to your Removal Company. Include large appliances, garden furniture and items in the attic, shed & garage.

Notify people of your new address

start preparing a list of people and organisations that you need to inform of your change of address. This can seem such a headache, so we have create a list of the most common organisation you will need to inform of their new postal address. Click here >

Set up Mail Redirection

Set up a mail redirection via Royal Mail. You don’t want to miss any essential mail that your buyers have not forwarded on to you.

You can use this service for three, six or 12 months. You need at least 5 working days for this to be set up in, but you can apply up to 3-month before you move

Cancel Accounts & Memberships

Now is the time to update, or close bank accounts or credit cards and store cards. And to cancel any club or gym memberships, as some will ask for a 4 weeks notice period.

Transfer of utilities

Contact your utility providers and arrange for your account to be closed, or transferred, on moving day, and for your final bill to be sent to your new address, along with with any refunds that may be due.

If you’ve been shopping around for the best deals in anticipation of your move now is the time to make your decision. To avoid any disruption in service it’s best to give your chosen utility providers at least 4 weeks’ notice of your impending house move.

Check the level of moving insurance

Ensure that any particularly valuable possessions are fully insured for transit by the removal company. If you have valuable possessions it’s important to check with the removal company to ensure that you are covered under the terms of their policy. If you decide to move your more valuable possessions yourself check that they are covered by your home contents insurance provider.

Don’t forget outdoor items as well as those in spaces such as the loft or the shed. If you’re downsizing now is the time to start looking for additional storage space if required.
