About Chislehurst
Chislehurst is a suburban area of south east London lying within the London Borough of Bromley. It is also considered one of the most expensive areas of London in which to live.
There has probably been a settlement here for over a thousand years and it was probably first settled before the Norman conquest of 1066.
Chislehurst has almost become synonymous with the renowned Chislehurst Caves. Though its origin is shrouded in much mystery there is ample evidence of the ‘caves’ being worked in Roman times for the mining of flint and chalk. There appears no evidence however of use by the Druids as some claim. The caves were worked as mines up until the latter part of the 19th century.
Though they are known as caves the complex is actually 22 miles of man-made tunnels. The complex was used extensively during both World War I and World War II. Though less well documented the caves were used to store ammunition from the Woolwich Arsenal during World War I. Conditions for workers deep in the caves were pretty dire as they were at risk of explosions, burns and jaundice from the chemical composition of the bombs.
During World War II the caves were used as a massive air shelter for mostly Londoners fleeing the blitz. Up to 15,000 people each night sheltered with facilities such as beds, lavatories, kitchens etc. The longest stay here is believed to have been 5 years!
Now the caves are a major tourist attraction in the area. They have also been used as a venue for concerts by world famous musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, the Who and the Rolling Stones
