5 Reasons why you should move to Beckenham

Beckenham has fast become a popular location to move to for young couples and families, but why are they choosing this south-east London suburb for their next home?

Beckenham is a lively town, often overlooked by larger neighbouring towns of Bromley and Croydon. Situated only 8.4 miles from the city, it has great transport links for those commuting to London and parents are finding it a great places to bring up a young family.

We have listed five reasons why Beckenham is a place you should consider when looking for your next home:

1. It has a bustling High Street

Beckenham is home to a bustling high street full of over 100 shops and restaurants. This assortment of local amenities gives residents plenty of choice when it comes to their shopping with many independent stores for both clothing and gifts, as well as supermarkets, so you are sure to find what you are looking for.

For coffee lovers there are a number of small independent cafes located along the high street from Novi & Co. coffee shop at one end, to Em’s cafe and Fee & Brown at the other, as well as a number chain that you would expect from a popular town.

The nightlife of Beckenham is also hugely popular with twenty-and thirty-something incomers looking for a good choice of places to go at the weekend or in the evening. The town offers a great mix of bars and pubs to quench your thirst in and the variety of restaurants is second to none; from fragrant curries of India, aromatic noodle stir fries of Thailand, to delicious Mediterranean cuisines, you are spoilt for choice in Beckenham.

2. There are great schools

There is an excellent range of public and private schools to choose from in Beckenham. Popular primary schools include Balgowan, Marian Vian, Unicorn and Langley Park Primary to name a few. the house prices in these areas will give you some idea of how popular these schools are.

For secondary schools, parents are spoilt for choice with the ever popular Langley Park School for Girls and Langley Park School for Boys; both of which accommodate successful sixth forms and there is also the two Harris Academies (Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley and mixed Harris Academy Beckenham).

The latest school to arrive in Beckenham is the mixed comprehensive school Eden Park High School.

3. There are amazing green spaces to explore

Beckenham offers an abundance of green spaces to its residents.

For a more traditional parks there is the stunningly beautiful Kelsey Park with its lakes, children’s playground tennis courts and crazy golf.

Close by to Kelsey is the Harvington Estate, which includes a woodland where the River Beck passes through (perfect for kids in their wellies to investigate), a children’s playground with zip-wire and playing fields.

Croydon Road Recreation Ground (known as ‘The Rec’ to residents), is a large Victorian park in the centre of the town. As well as offering landscaped gardens, tennis courts, a basketball court, football pitches and café, there is also an enclosed play area with a children’s paddling pool operational in the summer months. The park is also popular for outdoor events ranging from May Queen pageant and charity fetes to fire work displays, funfairs and concerts. There is also a thriving bowls club with immaculate greens.

Finally there is Beckenham Place Park. Although technically not located ‘in’ Beckenham, it is very close by in the neighbouring borough of Lewisham and easily accessible from the Bromley side. This old golf course and woodlands has recently been redeveloped, with a new children’s play area, swimming lake, cafe’s, bar and woodlands trails. 4. It has excellent transport links

Beckenham really is the best place to live if you need to get into London for work, or would like to easily escape into the countryside. It is only 8.4 mile from Central London, and has seven stations serving the Beckenham area – Beckenham Junction, Beckenham Hill, New Beckenham, Clock House, Eden Park, Elmers End, Kent House – with lines into London Bridge and Victoria..

There is also an excellent tram link which can get you from Beckenham Junction or Elmers End to Croydon and as far as Wimbledon, and there are also extensive bus services to all the surrounding towns.

5. There are a great variety of properties to suit all tastes & budgets

Beckenham has a wide variety of properties to suit all sorts of budgets and tastes. It has become a popular choice for young couples and families who have been priced-out of areas such as Dulwich and Balham and are looking to get more for their money, without having to move too far out of London.

Thanks to the rich history of the area Beckenham offers a range of Victorian and Edwardian detached, semi-detached and terrace houses; as well as twenties and thirties detached houses and semis, and a number of modern flats located near the town centre.

It’s much more affordable than in most of the London equivalents, so if you are looking for more space, but still be in a commutable distance into London, then Beckenham could be the answer for you.
