What Your “2 Months to Move Day” Checklist Should Be

Your offer has been accepted, now what?

Once your offer is accepted, the next stage will be planning your moving date. This will be the time to begin consulting conveyancers and surveyors, as well as speaking with your mortgage company.

It will become a time of intense planning, and all systems go, so you’ll need to be super organised in order to ensure that your move goes as smoothly as possible.

We have created this comprehensive checklist to help you get organised.

Create a Moving file

Create a separate file to store all the important information and documents related to your move in. Include all your to do lists and the names, phone numbers of important people and companies you will be dealing with, as well as all removal quotes and notes of conversations you’ve had.

You will want this file to hand, so store it somewhere convenient and ensure you don’t pack this away until the last moment of the move.

Start researching the legal process

If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to start looking for a surveyor and a conveyancer to manage the legal process.

Your estate agent may be able to help and provide their own recommendations, but we would suggest asking for recommendations from friends and family who will give you an honest opinion.

Notify schools

If you have children and are moving out of the area, it is vitality important to inform their school or nursery as early as possible of your intended move, so that a transfer of their records to the new school can be organised.

This might also be a good time to start thinking about their new uniform, in case this needs to be ordered, and getting in touch with their new school to find out their process of welcoming new pupils. they maybe able to offer a tour of the school as well as help to put you in touch with parents from their new class, which might making the transition easier.

Start to Declutter

Remember removal companies will quote you on the volume of items you need to move, so the fewer items you take with you, the cheaper your house move will be.

You may have already started this process if you have sold your current house, but if not now is the time to start getting rid of all your unwanted possessions.

Begin by making a full inventory of all the items you want to keep and start grouping all non-essential items together, so you can start disposing of them in advance of your move date.

Book time off work

This may be be an option for everyone, but you should try to book some time off work to move house. Ideally try and book off the day before your move, the actual moving day itself and the day after the move. Ask ask if these dates can be flexible, in case of any last minute changes.

Moving all your worldly possessions is no mean feat, and you will be emotionally and physically exhausted! By booking time off early in the plan, will ensure that this isn’t left to the last minute.

Call in the favours

As will booking time off work, now is the time to call in the favours from friends and family. As well as helping with the packing and moving, also think about people to look after your children and/or pets on moving day.

Research your utility companies

Before you get busied down with the packing, take some time to research the household utilities you’ll need in your new home, and the ones you will need to cancel in your old home.

For instance you may be moving to a house without broadband already installed. If you plan to work from home you will want to prioritise having this connected within the first few days of your arrival.

Now is the time to look up deals. You may wish to stay with your current provider and, if so, you should find out if there are any costs involved, as well as any installation timescales.
