The 12 Days of Moving

Moving house in the last month of the year can get really busy for removal companies, as many people plan to be in their new home in time for Christmas.

According to a survey by ReallyMoving, the busiest day of the year for moving home is usually the last Friday in August, but in 2020 this day was Friday 18th December, the last Friday before Christmas . In fact, it seems that every Friday in December 2020 apart from Christmas Day (4th, 11th and 18th December) were all among the top 10 busiest days to move in 2020 for the first time.

So, if you are planning a last-minute home move around this Yuletide, or in fact any time of the year, then this home moving guide is a little gift from us to help you plan for your move.

And it’s worth noting that at Casey’s we specialise in last minute and emergency moves, so if you are looking for a quick move, contact us today to see if we have availability.

On the 1st Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

Make sure your house is clutter free.

Decluttering is a great way to clear out all your unwanted things so that you can have a fresh start, and it will help maximize the space in your new home. It will also save you money and time, as removal companies charge for the amount of stuff you want moving, and the less you have, the less to pack.

Don’t forget to include sorting through your Christmas decorations and only keep the items that you want to take to your new home.

If you are moving before Christmas, also plan to keep these boxes handy, so you can get the decorations up in your new house as soon as your move in.

On the 2nd Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

Use a recommended removals company.

We would love to say that you should choose us for your packing and house removal, but don’t just take our word for it. Read the testimonials that other customers have said about us and decide for yourself.

We have listed some on our website, but you can also read more on the independent RemovalReviews website.

We are also please be have been chosen as a MumsTrusted Recommended Trader too.

On the 3rd Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

Get some quotes and compare them to me.

We recommend obtaining at least 3-4 removal cost estimates from different companies so you can compare, and get a ball-park figure to budget for.

As well as the actual cost, ensure you compare the services they provide as well as the benefits of using each company to help determine who suits your needs best.

If you are short of time, and find the prospect of packing too daunting, then we would recommend booking a packing service along with your removal.

You can get a free Moving Quote from Casey’s Removals by call our office on 020 8659 6677 or by completing our online moving quote form.

We also offer a full or partial packing service which you can add on.

On the 4th Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

Book your home removal survey A.S.A.P.

Once you have decided on who you are going to use for your House Removal, the next thing you’ll need to do is book a Home Removal Survey.

This involves a member of the removal company visiting your home so they can see exactly what items you want to be packed (if using their Packing service) and moved, and whether there are any access issues, such as parking restrictions, access permits, distance from door to truck, size of doorways for large items, number of stairs to negotiate and/or lifts, and what packing materials are needed.

It is best to discuss any type of restrictions as soon as possible, as applications for permits can take up to 10 days to arrange.

On the 5th Day of Moving, Casey’s gave to me:

Five Golden (Moving) Tips

Who doesn’t love a few handy tips to make moving house that little bit easier? We have moved hundreds of people over the years, and have built up quite a lot of knowledge in this field.

Our quick tip tips for your last week of moving is:

👉 MAKE SPACE FOR PARKING
Ensure you have an available parking space outside your property for your removal truck.

👉 LAST SUPPER
Base your last few meals on what you have in the cupboards and freezer, and don’t buy anything new!

👉 COLOUR CODE BOXES
Colour code your boxes with rooms so your movers know which room to place them in at the other end.

👉 CREATE A CLEANING BOX
Create a box of cleaning essentials for that last minute clean of the house.

👉 PACK YOUR KETTLE LAST!
Moving is thirsty work, so you’ll want to get this out first when you finally arrive in your new house… unless, of course, you have a bottle of bubbly already on ice!! 🍾

On the 6th Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

Get your New House address cards ready.

At this time of year you’ll no doubt be sending Christmas cards or emails to friends and family anyway, so why not add your new address to the message and save on postage!

And as if anyone needs an excuse to party at this time of year, why not arrange a House Warming Christmas Party – which is also a great way to meet your new neighbours.

Don’t forget to check the last Posting Dates before Christmas with the Royal Mail

On the 7th Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

Download our Moving Checklist for free.

The festive season can be overwhelming for anyone, let alone for someone who has to juggle a house move around Christmas parties, school nativities and festive days out!

Get your self organised and create a checklist of things you need to do for your move. You can download our Moving House Check list here to get you started.

As you will probably realise by now, there is a lot more to do then just packing, which is why booking a packing service with your move, especially at this time of year, will prove to be much less stressful.

On the 8th Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

Labelling Boxes with make unpacking easy.

labelling your moving boxes is a vital part of having a well-organised house move.

Each moving box should be labelled with the contents and the room in the home they are destined for. This will make the unloading process so much easier as the removal team can place the boxes into their proper location. It will also help you to locate things if you need to before you have unpacked everything.

TOP TIP: If you number the boxes, this will help you to easily identify if a box has been missed or put into the wrong room.

You should also use good quality boxes. We sell a range of boxes to suit your needs in our Casey’s Removals Packing Supply Shop on Beckenham Road, BR3.

On the 9th Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

On the 10th Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

Leave the heavy Items for us to carry

Moving can be a real pain, figuratively and literally if you’re not careful. Without experience, lifting heavy boxes and hauling them about can be extremely rough on the body, and the last thing you’ll want to do is injure yourself whilst moving house!

The most common injuries to happen during a house move are:

👉 Stained back
👉 Broken fingers
👉 Cuts and Scrapes
👉 Knee Injuries
👉 Sprained Ankles

And remember it’s not only the boxes you’ll need moving, add to that your furniture and white goods, as well as hazards such are steps, stairs and doorways!

The team at Casey’s Removal have years of experience moving our customers items safely and without injury to ourselves or our customer, from packing and lifting boxes the correct way to using all the proper equipment needed in a move be that trolleys or hoists.

On the 11th Day of Moving, Casey’s said to me:

We can move your piano safely.

Pianos are a wonderful musical instrument, and a great addition to any house. Who doesn’t love a good sing-song around one, especially at Christmas time? However moving one is another matter altogether.

Not only are pianos heavy and awkward to move, which can make it dangerous without the right equipment, but they can be an expensive, and in some cases sentimental, piece of furniture, which should be treated with the upmost care and attention.

Whether you need a Grand, Parlour/Boudoir, Baby or Upright piano moved, short or long distance, Casey’s Removals can help.  All pianos moved by us are insured in transit from first to last touch, so you can rest assure that your precious item is in safe hands with us.
