You’ve Got the Keys: Your Guide to Moving In

Your Guide to Moving In: Moving Day Part 2

The removals truck is packed, you’ve locked up your old house and handed the keys over to your estate agent – now what? If you have followed our previous advice from 6 Things to do before you leave your old property, then you are halfway through your Moving Day process, and hopefully still stress-free.

However, the next part can be the most stressful part of the whole moving house process – completing the transaction and collecting the keys!

To help we have compiled a guide to what happens next.

Collect the keys

All moves are different. Some movers are able to collect their keys in advance of their actual moving day, and others need to wait for the legal completion of their transaction to go through before the keys are released to them.

This is no doubt the most stress part of Moving Day. Fortunately it is fairly rare for transactions to fail at this point, but it can happen. In cases like this, it is worth speaking to your removals company to ask if they have short or long term storage facilities available to hold your belongings until the transaction is completed.

• Go to your new home

Now it’s time for the adventure to begin.

Ensure your movers have your contact telephone number so they can reach you if needed enroute. They may have traffic issues, need to take a different route to you (larger truck will avoid narrow roads where possible), or have simply stopped for lunch.

Find out from them their estimated time-frame for when you can expect them to arrive at your new property

Depending on the logistics of your move, you may wish to give them a key to your new property. This will allow them to start unloading if you get held up along the way.

• Guide your movers in

Once the movers arrive at your new home, give them a walk-through of the property and let them know which room each box should go in, and where you want furniture to be placed.

Your movers will unload the truck quickly, so it’s best to know these details in advance and not dilly-dally.

• Once in your new home

Once the movers leave, the first job you should do is make the beds and just unpack the essentials needed for the first night.

It’s likely that you won’t want to start the unpacking of boxes on your first day, especially if it was a long day. You’ll have a lot to do over the next few days, so to get you in the right frame of mind, you’ll need as much sleep as possible to help you feel refreshed and energised.

With this in mind, consider unpacking and hanging the curtains to help you avoid the early morning light, especially if you move in the summer months.

• And relax…

After a long and exciting day, you should spend your first evening relaxing.

Consider treating yourself to a takeaway meal on your first night as it can be very tiring moving and the last thing you will want to tackle is an unfamiliar oven. Or better still why not take a stroll and try out a local eatery in the area.

Moving house can be really stressful. One way to ensure that everything runs smoothly on moving day is plan ahead and be prepared.

The stress of moving house can come from feeling unprepared and leaving things to the last minute.

By creating a checklist for each stage of your moving journey, you will be more focused on the important things and ensure you haven’t left anything important out.
