What to pack in your ‘Essentials’ Box

Whether you are moving a few streets away or halfway around the world, moving day will be busy. You’ll have lots to do still and get get exhausted by the end of it, so you’ll need to prepare yourself to be super organised.

This is where packing an ‘Essential Box’ comes in handy.

An essentials box, or boxes in some cases, is packed with all the things that you are sure to need on moving day. Things like medicines, snacks, drinks, important and valuable items.

You need to ensure that this box is kept with you at all times so that it does not get packed onto the removal van.

Everybody will have their own idea as to what they absolutely must have easy access to on moving day, but the guide below may just provide you with some content ideas that you may have overlooked.

What to pack in your Essentials Box

Our list of essential items will ensure that you don’t have to get stressed about things such as finding the missing kettle or toilet roll during the first few hours in your new home.

General

  • Keys, money and phone chargers (place these together into a small box as these will be needed throughout the day).
  • Scissors / Pens / Paper
  • Matches / lighter
  • Basic DIY tools / Torch

Refreshments

Moving furniture and heavy items can be exhausting, make sure you have refreshments to hand.

Depending on your preference you may need the following:

  • Kettle / Tea / Coffee / Milk – UHT / Mugs / Sugar
  • Snacks that give you lots of energy
  • Basic crockery and cutlery
  • Cork screw, wine glasses and of course a bottle!
  • Washing up liquid
  • Tea towels and cloths / Cleaning products

Toiletries

Moving house can be dirty work and at the end of the day you will be grateful to wash away all the dust and dirt picked up.

You may need the following:

  • Wet wipes
  • Towels
  • Soap and shampoo
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Toilet paper
  • First aid kit

Overnight Bag

Pack a bag of clothes like you would if you were staying for a new nights somewhere. Include pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers, in case you were able to sort out the heating in your new house before bedtime.

First Night Bedding

You will also need pillows, duvets and basic bedding to hand by the end of the first day to make sure you have a good night’s sleep.

Also consider whether you may need something to cover your windows up – a sheet and a few tacks can be effective as a short-term solution.
