The Woolwich Removal Company of Choice
About Woolwich
Lying around 3 miles east of Greenwich this is an historic military and naval area of what is now part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The area has been inhabited since at least the Iron Age though it remained merely a small Kentish town until the beginning of the 16th century.
The Woolwich Dockyard (or Kings Yard as it was originally known) was founded by Henry VIII in 1512. This heralded the start of Woolwich’s development as a maritime, military and industrial centre. Probably the best known of these developments was the founding of the Royal Arsenal in 1805 which evolved into a series of military factories (Royal Ordnance factories). These played a major role in supplying Britain’s military, Imperial and industrial expansion.
Though the dockyard closed in 1869 decline didn’t begin until the late 20th century with the closure of the Royal Ordnance Factory (1967) and large employers like the German manufacturer Siemans (1968).
After a period of decline the 21st century has seen extensive regeneration being undertaken. Improvements in the areas of transport, housing, leisure and culture have boosted the economy significantly. The arrival of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and the impending arrival of Crossrail are amongst the most notable projects undertaken.
This regeneration has led to the area attracting many young people to the area (lower average house prices) and many young startup businesses (lower average rents per square foot) leading to a vibrant atmosphere.
