About Coulsdon
Coulsdon lies mainly within the London Borough of Croydon though parts also fall within the London Borough of Sutton and also within Reigate & Banstead.
The location forms part of the North Downs which contain both chalk & flint and several dry valleys. There is evidence of human occupation from all the important ages (Neolithic, Iron Age, Anglo-Saxon, Bronze Age, roman & Medieval).
The original Coulsdon is now the area known as ‘Old Coulsdon’. As settlements grew around Coulsdon South and Coulsdon Town stations the original became the ‘Old’.
A large part of the history of Coulsdon is dominated by the Byron family. Thomas Byron purchased the extensive manorial estate in 1782 and the family were in residence for some 140 years.
Up until the First world War the area was largely rural in nature with estates, cottages and farmland.
Though the Byrons had periodically disposed of land both by sale and gift it was until 1922 that the last remaining lands were disposed of and the land and manorial rights passed to then then urban council. It was in this inter war period that roads and housing were laid out to any great significant extent
Today Coulsdon has very much a small rural town feel to it even though it is part of the Borough of Croydon. It has many independent shops on the high street (even a Butcher) along with good schools, plenty of churches and various sporting facilities (cricket, rugby and martial arts). It is also popular for its proximity to the M25 and Gatwick Airport.
