About Bermondsey SE1
The beginnings of Bermondsey are Saxon in origin with its village centre around Abbey Street. The middle ages saw the establishment of a Cluniac Priory (later an Abbey).
Bermondsey only really began to develop after the Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of London in 1666. Those fleeing these two events began to move out from the city to surrounding villages.
Around 1770 a Thomas Keyse discovered a natural spring in what is now Spa Road. With the Victorians belief in the health properties of mineral water Bermondsey boomed and developed into a spa town. Needless to say the boom didn’t last and the spa closed in 1804. However, this short period did see substantial construction of many fine houses in the area.
The 18th and 19th centuries saw the rapid development of Bermondsey into an industrial centre with particular emphasis on tanning and leather works alongside food processing.
As the port of London rapidly expanded wharfs and warehouses were built along the river. As London itself rapidly grew Bermondsey was swallowed up. The area though was extremely poor with many of the residents unskilled and in casual employment. This was the London of Charles Dickens with its extreme poverty and slums.
Once the port of London went into decline in the 1950s and 1960s Bermondsey declined with it becoming an extremely deprived area.
It was only with the setting up of the London Docklands Development Corporation in 1981 that regeneration of the area began. This regeneration encompassed residential and commercial development. Transport links were developed incorporating the area into both the London Overground and Underground systems.
