The Thornton Heath Moving Company of Choice
About Thornton Heath
This London suburb sits at the base of the Norwood Hills in a valley formed at the time of the last ice age. Neolithic remains have been found in the area that is now Thornton Heath Pond.
Up until the arrival of the railways Thornton Heath was centered around the Pond. An isolated farmhouse lying between the Pond and Whitehorse Manor eventually became the site off the railway station and from where eventual expansion fanned out. It the history of the farmhouse that appears to have epitomised much of what Thornton Heath was about – crime & coal (or charcoal).
The colliers burnt wood from the nearby Norwood Hills. Their high prices and the smoke and dirt arising from the wood burning made them extremely unpopular. The farmhouse’s most famous occupant was alleged to be the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin. That tells you all you need to know about the areas character during the 18th century.
Lawlessness came at a price though. A huge Gallows was situated at the Pond and on many maps of the era simply appears as Gallows Green.
The 18th and early 19th century saw limited development of the area. There were physical barriers to expansion, in the form of the Croydon Canal and the Surrey Iron Railway, and natural barriers in thee form of the Norwood Hills.
Though there was ‘ribbon’ development in the area, Thornton Heath was really only seen as a point on the London to Brighton road (today’s A23) and suffered in this respect due to its proximity to Croydon. The period 1861-1911 did see a transformation from rural to integrated suburban development with a new railway station and further development of the London-Croydon road. Thornton Heath in this period saw both middle class and working class rub shoulders which was unusual in itself.
Even today Thornton Heath is a sort of ‘piggy in the middle’ – sort of anonymous on the road between London and Croydon
